National Provider Identifier (NPI) |
|
The purpose of this notice is to provide information to All Kids Application Agents (AKAAs) on the department’s implementation of the National Provider Identifier (NPI).
Under the final Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) National Provider Identifier Rule, most but not all AKAAs will be required to obtain an NPI. Entities that do not provide health care such as community-based organizations, including faith-based organizations, day care centers, local governments, unions, non-emergency transportation providers, and licensed insurance agents are not required to obtain an NPI.
All health care providers such as physicians, hospitals, clinics, Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC), mental health service providers, certified health departments, school-based health centers, Early Intervention service providers,
home health agencies, community health agencies will be required to obtain a NPI.
However, at this time, for the purpose of submitting each All Kids and FamilyCare application (Form 2378MC), all providers must continue to use their current provider number on file with the department. This applies to both the paper All Kids and FamilyCare application (Form 2378MC) and the online application accessed through the Medical Electronic Data Interchange (MEDI) system.
To ensure that AKAAs do not experience denials in the payment of Technical Assistance Payments (TAPs), AKAAs must continue to use their provider number on file with the department.Â
All health care providers will be notified of additional information regarding the NPI requirements, both for hard copy and electronic claims, as it becomes available.Â
Your participation in our programs is greatly appreciated.
